Alphabet Hunt: Identifying letters through games
Letter identification can and should develop as a natural curiosity of young children. As children grow in their ability to notice and interpret different symbols, parents need to encourage this behavior through fun and meaningful interactions with different symbols, including letters.
So get ready to go hunting! Write letters on post-its or pieces of paper that have tape on them. Then hide the letters randomly in a room, your house or even the backyard! As you find the letters put them in a box or basket for safe keeping. Make sure to say the letter's name as you put it in the box. Now encourage your child to finish the letter hunt. As your child finds different letters encourage them to identify the letters they know and assist them when they cannot name the letter.
A helpful tip to increasing letter knowledge is to simultaneously talk about the letter parts. For example, talking about how the letter "A" is made of three lines, while the letter "O" is one big circle.
