Wish You Well Cards: Building empathy skills through literacy

When we are separated from friends, family or other loved ones we often miss them. This absence from someone that is close to us can be a large source of anxiety for young children. Something young children can do to feel better is to call the loved ones they are missing.

Paired with the call could also be a letter. Depending on your child's literacy ability, they can write simple words or letters, or include pictures in their letter that they write.

Take time to explain what a letter is and how it will be delivered. If your child is not ready to write words or letters, you can always write what they would like to say in your own handwriting under what your child has written.

You can model letter writing for your child by writing on of your own. Try saying, "Today I am going to write a letter to ______, because I really miss them. I am going to write words and draw a picture." You can then ask, "Who are you going to write a letter for? How is it going to look?"

Use the song sheet below to incorporate music expression into this activity.
