Smack Letters: Physically Engaging Letter Learning
Get ready to jump and make some noise with letters! A great method of engaging young learners is to make sure that they are using lots of different modalities (ways of learning). This activity not only has children recalling their letter knowledge, they are also physically looking for the letters, and can hold them and trace along them with their fingers.
Post letters on the wall; this can be done by writing letters on post-its or pieces of paper that are then taped to the wall. Tell your child which letter to search for or just have them find as many as they can. Once they find the letter, your child will get to smack the letter with their hands! How they find the letter matters way less than what you do once they find their letters.
Try talking about what the letter looks like; how many lines it has? how many curves? what does the letter look like? Feel free to also incorporate a letter sound activity as well! As your child finds the letter ask for the letter sound as he/she smacks the letter. They can do this with their hands or fly swatter.
